One of the best things about these CPD days is the opportunity to connect with fellow instructors, exchange ideas and, of course, enjoy a bit of climbing together!     Lovely to spend the day with Mark and his team at Argoed Lwyd Outdoor Education Centre in South Wales, completing their latest Technical Advisor Health Check. One of the most valuable parts of returning each year is seeing the progress that’s been made since the previous visit. A big well done to Mark and the team for completing the actions identified during their 2025 health check and continuing to develop their systems and practice. 👏 Technical Advisor support isn’t just about identifying actions. It’s about following them through, supporting continuous improvement and making sure good practice becomes part of the everyday operation.     A week of rescue reassessments with the Go Ape teams 🌲🧗‍♂️ First up was Go Ape Southampton at Itchen Valley, where the team demonstrated the rescue skills they work hard to keep current. These guys practise their rescues every two weeks, alongside a ground based reassessment every quarter, and that commitment really shows. Then it was over to Go Ape Moors Valley and the Dream Team. Plenty of entertainment and humour as always, but when it came down to the assessments, they were professional, slick and confident in demonstrating their skills. Two different teams, two great days and a really high standard of rescue skills across the board.     Had the pleasure of a few adventures over in Croatia the other week 🇭🇷🧗‍♂️ And came across this little surprise waiting at the top of a cliff… 👀 A good reminder that anchors and equipment exposed to the elements can deteriorate in ways that aren’t always immediately obvious. UV exposure in particular can have a significant effect on textile materials over time. Just because something is already there doesn’t automatically mean it’s suitable to trust. Always check your anchors, consider their condition and history, and if in doubt, don’t use them.     Another really valuable conversation from the ABC Conference was with Nick from the Association of British Climbing Walls, looking at their accident recording data and what we can learn from it. We had a fascinating discussion around accident statistics and the potential to compare climbing wall data with that from other leading sports industries across the UK. We also spent time discussing the types of injuries being recorded on bouldering walls, which raised some really interesting points around trends, learning and how data can help inform good practice across the industry. Hopefully we’ll see more information coming out on this soon and, ideally, see that knowledge made accessible to the wider climbing community, not just ABC members.     Last week I had the pleasure of attending the Association of British Climbing Walls Conference 🧗‍♂️ A really valuable day and a great opportunity to catch up with some familiar faces, meet plenty of new ones and spend some time exploring the different stands and chatting with others from across the industry. One of the highlights for me was the session focused on Technical Advisors. There were some great conversations around the role, shared experiences and plenty of knowledge being passed around the room. A special shout out to Dan for sharing his knowledge around matting and inspections. Lots to take away and think about. The day was spent getting up close and personal with plenty of PPE, completing the scheduled six monthly thorough inspections. 🔍 It’s detailed work, checking each item carefully for condition, wear, damage and anything that could affect its continued safe use.
