Where to Climb in Dorset (AKA Our Favourite Playgrounds)
1. Portland – Sport Climbing Heaven
If limestone sport climbing is your jam, head straight to Portland. With over 900 routes and killer views of the English Channel, it’s the crown jewel of Dorset’s crags. Easy access, solid bolting, and a mix of grades – perfect whether you’re testing your mettle or just out for a friendly vertical wander.
2. Swanage – Trad, Sea Cliffs and a Bit of Nerve
Trad climbers, rejoice. Swanage brings the spice with bold sea cliff routes and gear placements that keep your brain working as hard as your biceps. The Old Harry Rocks are a must-do if you’re into scenic exposure and type-two fun.
3. Wareham Forest – Bouldering Bliss
If ropes aren’t your thing, get your crash pad and head to Wareham Forest. This woodland wonderland is full of sandstone problems, peaceful vibes, and enough variety to keep even the most skin-shy boulderer entertained.
Climbing Styles – What’s Your Flavour?
- Trad Climbing: You place the gear, you take the glory (and the responsibility). Ideal for those who like puzzles and protection.
- Sport Climbing: Pre-placed bolts, pure movement. Portland’s your place for this.
- Bouldering: Short, punchy problems. No rope. Just you, your mat, and gravity. Try Wareham Forest for a solid session.
Not sure what suits you best? We’ll help you figure it out.
What You’ll Need (AKA The Kit List)
Climbing gear isn’t just shiny—it keeps you alive. Essentials include:
- Harness – Comfy, adjustable, not your dad’s hand-me-down from the 80s.
- Shoes – Snug fit, good grip, and smell only slightly horrific.
- Helmet – Because rocks fall, and heads don’t like that.
- Belay device & rope – For the roped-up folks.
- Cams, nuts & quickdraws – Depending on your climbing style.
- Chalk & bag – Sweaty palms lose grip. Trust us.
- Bouldering mat – For those who prefer their climbing short and sweet.

Safety First, Always
Climbing’s meant to be exhilarating, not life-threatening. So:
- Check your gear. Then check it again.
- Know your route.
- Climb with a partner (we’ve got plenty if you’re solo).
- Watch the weather – Dorset cliffs + rain = a slip ‘n slide you don’t want.
- Brush up on your belay skills and climbing calls.

When to Climb in Dorset?
- Spring & Autumn: Prime conditions – cool, dry, and colourful.
- Summer: Early mornings and evenings are best. Midday sun? Nah, we’re not lizards.
- Winter: Only for the hardy. Conditions can be grim, but the crags are quiet. Bring gloves (for after).
Climbing Events Worth Checking Out
Dorset hosts a bunch of climbing events throughout the year. Keep an eye out for:
- Portland Bouldering Festival – Think sweaty fingers, chalk clouds, and top banter.
- Swanage Trad Comp – Where climbers go to test their grit.
- Local club meets and socials – We know a few. Drop us a line.
